THE BOOK OF JOHN CHAPTER 1 VERSES 1 TO 5.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God. 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
The grip:
The best approach to explain the scriptures in context is to know the intention of the writer. Here in the first chapter of John, 1 to 5, John is obviously introducing the reader of his gospel to Jesus Christ as God in the flesh. Unlike the previous books written prior to John's writings, John did not bother to locate Jesus in the setting of his natural lineage, instead he declares, "in the beginning was the word" John usage of "the word" was intentional, he chose a term both his Jewish and Gentile readers are familiar with to communicate an unfamiliar truth. The Greek word translated "word" in this passage is "Logos" and it was common in Jewish and Greek philosophy of that day. In the old testament, the "word" of God is often personified as an instrument for the execution of God's will. "Psalms 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth." this is the reason he further expressed verse 3 that all things were made through him... So John was pointing to the old testament where the "word" of God is associated with the personification of God's revelation. He didn't stop there, he also went ahead to present Jesus Christ not as a mere meditating principle like his audience already perceived, but as a being, fully divine and fully human, Christ wasn't just a personification of God's revelation as the Jews thought, He was God's perfect revelation of Himself in the flesh. Nothing has authentic existence without their origin, the true identity of every creation is trapped in the word. Our identity is trapped in the revelation of the "word" Jesus Christ, and this becomes impossible for the ignorance(darkness) of man to comprehend this light(Knowledge/revelation).
Our identity is Jesus Christ (the word), whatever identity the world, your situation, your emotion or your background has given you is not true. Your true/authentic identity is in the word of God.
Prayer focus: Father, let your light illuminate every form of darkness on my heart in Jesus name. Amen.
Comment, contribute, ask questions and share.
Glory to God, my identity is the Word which is Jesus Christ. Hallelujah
